چکیده

Background: Pre-eclampsia is a frequent obstetrical problem responsible for adverse effects on pregnancy outcome. Aim: To find role of serum uric as an early predictor o f preeclampsia. Methods: A case control study was conducted on 30 pre-eclampltic women and 20 age matched women with normal pregnancy. Patients were taken from Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Lahore, from January 2015 to December 2016. Pre-eclampsia was diagnosed by pregnancy with gestational age >20 weeks, with blood pressure ≥140/ ≥90 mm Hg and 24-hour urinary protein ≥300 mg. Blood samples were collected for estimation of serum uric acid. Serum uric acid was measured by Autoanalyzer using standard kit of Merck. Results: Mean age of normal pregnancy group was 28.43±4.11 with mean gestational age was 30.90±3.9 weeks. Mean age of pre-eclampsia group was 29.07±5.54 with mean gestational age was 28.70±4.0 weeks. Level of serum uric acid was increased in pre-eclampsia group as compared to level of serum uric acid of group of normal pregnant women and it showed a highly significant difference (P<0.001). Serum uric acid as a biomarker showed 65% sensitivity and 95% specificity with 95% positive predictive value. Conclusion: It is concluded that age may be an independent risk factor for developing preeclampsia. Serum uric acid level may be a biomarker of preeclampsia and also may help to monitor the disease.

Hyperuricemia and Perinatal Outcomes in Patients with Severe Preeclampsia

Maternal, fetal and neonatal complications are correlated with hypertensive disorders during pregnancy.  In this context, the maternal blood uric acid level is reported to be one of the prognostic factors in determining the prenatal outcome.  Based on the existing data, the present descriptive study was performed on two groups of women with severe preeclampsia; the first group (n=53) with a uri...

Uric acid is considered by some investigators as one of the most sensetive indicators in preeclampsia. In contrast some researchers have found it not useful in pr...

A REVIEW ON ESTIMATION OF SERUM LDH AND URIC ACID IN HYPERTENSIVE VS NORMAL PREGNANT WOMAN AND ITS CORRELATION WITH MATERNAL OUTCOME in A TERITIARY CARE HOSPITAL

Hypertension is the most common medical problem encountered in pregnancy and remains an important cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. It complicates up to 15% of pregnancies. The review was intended to assess the prognostic significance of the value of serum LDH and used as a marker of preeclampsia. Higher serum LDH and uric acid level associated with increased incidence of mat...

Prognostic significance of serum uric acid in women with gestational hypertension.

Aim of our study was to ascertain, prospectively, whether serum uric acid is a suitable predictor of preeclampsia and/or the delivery of small-for-gestational-age infants in women with gestational hypertension. We screened 206 primiparas, with a singleton pregnancy, referred for recent onset of hypertension. At presentation, we measured serum uric acid, creatinine, blood glucose, hemoglobin and...

Uric acid: a clinically useful marker to distinguish preeclampsia from gestational hypertension.

During early pregnancy, serum uric acid levels fall, often to 3 mg/dL, related to the uricosuric effects from estrogen and from the increase in renal blood flow. Uric acid levels then increase during the third trimester, reaching levels of 4 to 5 mg/dL by term (reviewed in Reference 1). However, it is known that subjects destined to develop preeclampsia show slightly higher serum uric acid leve...
